    Hello All,
I have been offered the item pictured below.
I am not an edged weapon collector.

Firstly my assumptions are that it is a cut down bayonet.

Does anyone know what it is? Is it of any value?

Any opinions or information would be appreciated.

    All the best

Looks like a Canadian Ross rifle bayonet. Also looks to have had the blade reshaped.

    Any Idea what this is?

I do not think the blade has been bastardised. It is my understanding that a lot of these were re- worked as the earlier tip was not very good for penetrating through clothing so a sharper point was called for, as is on yours. I do not think these are overly common and yours is in nice condition. Cheers.

Spitace41 that is some really informative info you have come up with.
Browsing that site you directed me to I found the interesting point that these Ross bayonets so I assume the rifles as well were issued to British troops.
I remember the story my Dad told me. They were issued with a 'Canadian Rifle' for the landings at Anzio.
They did not see any Germans but were told to fire their rifles inland(I assume to lay some sort of fire down on the non existent enemy) But the Rifle after several hundreds of rounds the barrel began to twist and distort with the heat and became useless!

So perhaps the rifle and the bayonet were not really fit for purpose.

    Many thanks
    Doug

Also, during WW1 it was found that the bolt had a nasty tendency of flying back on firing as it was a straight pull and whacking the firer in the face. I have read that a few deaths were caused in this way. It was deemed an excellent sniper's rifle, however it could not really hack it in everyday service life.
