A compass , it´s box and a badge ,Soldier bringbacks from 1941.

My fellow collectors

These three items were brought home by my Grandmothers first husband
the Unteroffizier Wilhelm Schenk.
Willy was serving in the IR 133 , the regiment attacking the Brest Litowsk
Fortress on the first day of the russian campaign.
Willy did not make it home , he fell on february 11th in the Orel region.

While the small compass and the part of the Osoviakim badge are quite clear to me , I really would like to know the meaning of the writing on the small cardboard box that was used to keep the compass.
Is it the original box of the compass ?

Hi Bernard, i would say it is the original box. The medal if found in the box would have probably been put there by your grandfather for safe keeping. The box would have been issued to a commissar because only the higher ranks would have been given them because the soviet war industry would have been using all raw materials on t-34 and small arms.

Hi Bernard,

Interesting items with a story. The box is not from the compass, its from a ribbon for a typing machine (inscription on top reads: лента для пишущея машинки). The box is made in Moscow in June 1940 (stamp on the back of the box) in a paper factory. The compass is made in a precision instruments factory No 1. It was common to wear compasses for all officers of the RKKA and you frequent see photos with a wrist watch and a compass (both arms). This compass is more of desk version or the one that would sit in a "planshet" for paperwork and maps worn by the same officers. Hope that helps!
