YEs, in this case, the first 2 digits of the serial are the year of production.
It looks like some of it has been modified or replaced or repainted?

Hi, thanks for your quick help! This really helps! To me it doesnt look repainted, just heavily worn or cleaned as its the bare metal that shows through but Im not a specialist. I found a pair that appears to be from the same maker just marked with hammer and sickle: WW2 item Looks the same just less worn.

    Kind regards

    Ben

The center cap on the hinge looks repainted, wasn't refering the the whole thing (which looks its age). Just the cap.
    Yours was made at GOMZ.

Thanks for the info about the maker! The parts that remain black are bakelite, not repainted :-)

    Kind regards

Edited: I was clearly wrong and going on memory, indeed you are correct when I bothered to go pull some out and look at them. I guess this is why they are sometimes missing? Please forgive the error!

Check this pic, the part is also equally worn as the rest of the binoculars:

Very sorry! I thought you were talking eye cups! And I should have been looking at my own pairs!
    I'll change my message.
