My husband recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan, and while there came across a belt buckle that appears to have Soviet origins. It has the Soviet star with the sickle and hammer in the middle. There is some distortion to the hammer due to the damage from time and whatever else has happened to this buckle, but it is clearly the sickle and hammer. It appears to be copper or a copper alloy (maybe brass as well, but seems to have more of a coppery color than brass).

However, it has two features that I have not been able to find in any mention online. The star itself sits within a pentagon, and the edge of the buckle is raised. There is also a symbol on the back of the buckle, but no idea thus far what it means or where it comes from.

I can provide pics in a while, I am trying to clean up the mark on the back so as to make it more clear.

Have any of you seen one like this, and is there any way to tell approximately how old this is?

More than likely a relic from the 1980's Soviet invasion ..
.. But as ever, pictures would help greatly.

    Hello,
    Welcome to the forum!
Without seeing the photo I think it is a buckle "Dembelski" (soldier at the end of service)
    The pentagon is characteristic.

That is it. Only difference is the dome shape to the center. This one is flat. Sorry I have not posted one yet, it is not feeling "photogenic" right now, some of the greenish-white corrosion that is on the buckle itself is making it hard to photograph.

    Hi ,
    the "Dembelski" personalize their uniforms
and belt buckles at the end of their service.
