    Default British 1943 tent heater

Hi Guys, another small item from my collection.

This 1943 dated tent heater/ lamp is in almost new condition never having been lit. It comes in a tin which is WD marked, 1943 dated & maker marked 13 MB (Metal Box Company). The top of the can is marked, no doubt in order that it would be stored upright to prevent loss of the Parafin used to light it.

The wick holder is maker marked for "Sherwoods Limited"

These were not widespread issue and most likely intended for Arctic use by Mountain troopers etc.

    Cheers, Ade.

It is small and measures 80mm across and 120mm high. I guess it would help warm cold hands etc.

    Cheers, Ade.

The darn thing looks like it just came off the supply shelf. That ceramic wick holder is very decorated for a war time model, they must have used that same piece for lamps and such pre-war. Thanks for showing Ade.

Hello. I am brand new to this site as of today, thanks to my wife who was doing research on a similar tent warmer acquired this weekend from the estate of a US WW2 veteran. Mine has been used, but still has 5 inches of wick. The markings are identical to Adrian's, but the outside of mine is painted baby blue. What fuel did they use? In advance, thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

These would have used Parafin for fuel.

    Cheers, Ade.

Question Re: British 1943 tent heater

Thanks Ade. Is kerosene the "Yank" term for paraffin? Also, any idea why my tin is painted baby blue?

Hi, yes, sorry, Kerosene to our American cousins.

No idea why it was painted blue.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade. I am not a collector of these kind of items, and baby blue paint notwithstanding, do you have any idea of value? It needs to go to a home that appreciates it. I'll probably list it on eBay. I can send pics if I have an e-mail address. Regards, Al.
