Today I've won a gas mask and bag on eBay, attached to the bottom of the house is a metal tag as pictured. Obviously it states his name, but I don't have an idea what the rest means? Protestant? Seaman? Battalion?

P is almost certainly his faith. The couple of tags I have are both marked 'CE' for Church of England. Couldn't speak for the others, but one of them will typically denote his branch of service. I have one attached to a mask as well, 'R.N' for Royal Navy.

Thanks BrodieBartfast. Would be interesting to find out what the rest represents? So P stands for Protestant.
I'd assume so, although in this hobby assumption is the mother of all mistakes.
Hopefully somebody comes along shortly who knows a good deal more about dog tags than I do.

From what I've read SMN means seaman. So it seems it's just the numbers and letters underneath are what I need answers for now
Could be the soldier's service number, or part of it. My great grandmother's tag has her number stamped around the edge.

Would be nice if someone could shed some light on it.
Excellent Bananamafia, you've made my day! Thank you
Where could I find his military service history? It's nice to add more information to a piece.
