How do you put the m1928 U.S pack tail on the haversack

Old thread, but there's nothing wrong with recycling

Could someone tell me what the tail/pack carrier body is used for? I just bought one for $22.53, and in the same condition as yours!

Hello,

The pack tail was used to hold the sleeping roll in place. You could pull the leather strap and drop the tail and roll with out unpacking.

It appears that the tail posted attached to the pack in the above photo is improperly hooked up. The leather tab should be able to be removed from the outside. For specific instructions refer to FM 21-100 "SOLDIER'S HANDBOOK" July 23 1941 or any other Soldier's handbooks with this title from the war time ear.

Hello,

You have the leather strap correct! The green strap on the leather strap is your quick release. Pull this and it will disconnect the upper part of the long pack from the lower part. The tail will be still wrapped around the sleeping roll.
