Default Mystery cotton bag marked LRDG

    Morning all
I just bought a strange bag from Ebay. It is in thin green cotton with draw-ties at the open end. It is about eight inches square, stamped “60 .5 [illegible]” inside, and “43” as well as some unreadable wording.
Externally it has WD and LRDG stamped on it as well as a number 1.

I wondered if anyone had any inspiration as to what it was!
Obviously I assume its connected with the Long Range Desert Group, but I guess LRDG units wouldnt have taken anything with LRDG written on them into action (?) - its in very good condition, no holes etc. I wondered if it was a bag used to store something relevant to the LRDG at some rear-area ofice?
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

    Sam (newbie)

Hi Sam and welcome to the group.

Unfortunately the pic that you posted has not come through, at least not on my screen! Can you try reposting the pic/s again please.
From your description and without seeing it, it sounds like a Millbank filtration bag, but I/we would need to see it to be sure one way or the other.

    Regards etc

    Hiya Ian

Thanks for that. I will try and sort the picture. I dont think its a Millbank bag - Ive got one (modern one) and the Millbank I have is bigger, pointed (to allow sediment to collect) and made of stronger cotton. This material is very like the old "Lightweight" OG trousers were made out of.
Will have another go at a pic

Also - its not a Boyes .5 ATR ammo bag, nor is it a ration tins bag....

    Sam,

I think that I may have solved the problem of your bags identity, from what you say, and the fact that you already have access to a Millbank bag, and know its NOT one of them, I am going to suggest that it is a mess-tins cover.
There is an excellent website for just about all things British webbing called Karkee Web
If you go to it, then onto the section "pattern 1937 associated equipment", near the bottom of that page you will find a couple of pictures of "Stores Ref: A1/AA 0779 Cover, mess-tin, rectangular"

Hope this is of some help.

    Regards etc
