    Any little stamps or markings on the kit or contents?

    yes the legible numbers are 27593531 on the kit on the pencil it is marked H NO.596 royal sovereign "YELLOW HEX" Made in GT. Britain.
    I know as I am his brother.
    Edit: The numbers are in ink and look stamped.

    I believe that it's the standard issue WW2 British sewing kit (housewife).
    This style of sewing kit dates back to WW1 I believe (possibly even before that).

    An odd Addition
