RAF Lighter??

Picked this up today. Took a chance. Has anyone seen one of these? Not sure if WW2 or earlier. Is the crown a clue? Not being British, I can't tell

What ever was written on the top has long since been worn down. Totally illegible.

Would love to hear your thoughts?

I'm thinking you are right about our cousins across the pond being able to identify the time period/monarch by the crown. I remember reading a thread about that but for the life of me I'm not sure where I read it.
It looks like it was soldered closed. Most lighters you pull the lower inner section off to fill with lighter fluid and slide it back in the base. Maybe with that one you unscrew the wick and fill it that way???

I still think it would display well with RAF items!!!!!

Kings crown, before the Queens coronation about 1952. maybe interwar also?
Not sure if its a commercial piece? The squadrons had their own workshops and the boys sometimes made keepsakes when the boss wasn't looking. Really charming lighter! Would go nicely with an RAF sweetheart badge collection.

The RAF was formed in April 1918 so anytime after that to around 1952 as Oz mentions.

Phil, I think the bit with the wheel unscrews to fill the lighter.

This has real age and patina. Personally I think it is pre WW2. Maybe late WW1?

Thanks Chris. I have no idea. It caught my eye and looked like a great piece to have. The website above from Didier has similar styles but no dates.
