I am thinking a compass ,
If its a compass pouch it should have a soft padded interior. I dont think it is.
Its a compass pouch,I have one the same with the compass in it
Fair enough. It does have differences to the standard 37 compass pouch though.
I'm confused about the attachment fittings on the back, Is it a belt loop? How would it attach to a belt?
Here is the one i have , which looks to be post war but the same pattern
My understanding was they were for ammeters or something similar, the compass fitting is just a coincidence. A better and more padded compass pouch already existed as part of the 37 Patt set so why create something new that didn't work with the holster, binocular pouch etc? I will have a hunt in my reference books and see if I can find anything further though...
You may be right but i have seen this type of pouch used for the compass in a Royal Engineer store in the 1980s ,may be down to lack of the proper 58 patt pouch being available i dont know . I will dig my one out and see if i can try and read the text on the front to see if it helps
I think it's for a voltmeter...
