Default US Compass ww1 or ww2

I hope that you guys can help me with this compass. It is a pocket watch type compass, the outside front is marked “US” and the maker name “Wittnauer” is marked on the face. My question is, is it a WW1 or a WW2 compass? I have seen it called both on line. Was it a WW1 hold over?

Hi Georg, it is my understanding that these are circa WW1 in design. But they certainly saw service in WW2 as well.

    Cheers, Ade.

Hey Georg, the WWII US Army pilot had this type of compass. How do I Know? A vet gave me his, before he passed away.
I don't know if other branches used them tho.

There is no way to know all military units were given this compass. The engineer corps had USCE on them.
