Is there any way to date this by the only tag shown on it? It is a pullover type jacket.

G'day Zwerge,
It is a WW2 smock, here's some info I have found for you -
US Navy in WWII used NXSX-12345 type contract codes.
N meaning Naval, XS is the designation for supply and accounts which oversaw all contracting bureaus as follows:
A- Aeronautics
X-Supplies and Accounts
Y- Yards and Docks
R- Radio Division
P- Naval Personnel
S- Others
M-Medicine and Surgery
on and on
Commonly seen contract numbers are NXSX
NXSA
NXSY
NXSR
and so on
Noteworthy are the bureaus that contract through themselves.
OA Aeronautics
OY Yards and Docks
OBS- Ships
OP- Naval personnel
ORD- Ordnance
OM-Marine Corps
TCG- Coast Guard
US Navy stuff is rarely dated, only marked with the contract number, any date is month/day/and fiscal year contract was awarded, not the date of mfg. Thus N5XS would be 1945.
16868 oct. 1942, 58, dec 42; 21747 jan 43 and so on.
Thanks very much Rene, could you give me the website for this info?..Thanks again..Pete...AKA Zwerge.
