Well, according to by reference book it is the bottom pack of a two part set that was used to carry demolitions equipment.
Rare bit of kit in my opinion.

Thanks so much for your reply. I had wondered based on its rectangular shape that it carried a box of some sort. The quick release buckles make a lot of sense for carrying demolitions equipment, especially for use under fire.
Can you tell e what reference book you used to identify my bag? I would like to read more about it.

No problem.I don't know why I didn't mention the book in the first place!Its in 'Equipment of the ww2 tommy' by David b Gordon.Pages 54-55.
Its a pricey book but worth every penny.
