I just purchased a Volunteer Defence Corps (Australian Home Guard) daylight short range signal lamp and box. In the box was 8 of these batteries still connected together to make a 12v system. Seems like they are fairly rare so I thought I'd share a couple of photos here.

Personally never seen one before so rare is the word! Thankful they had not perished like modern batteries. Do they move the needle on a volt meter?

Yes they all give out power to some extent. One gives out nearly 1 volt.

I wasn't sure about this unit when I bought it online but I'm glad I did. I was told from the guy I got it of that it was from a WA Home Guards unit. It is obviously a home-made unit based on the army issue short range signalling units but has the right lamp and morse code parts for WW2. The bulb is a Siemens 10volt 'A' which fits the era too. I guess funding for our VDC was limited so they had to make do with what they could get.
