Found this in a remote antique shop. I can't find much online. Third Marines saw pacific action in WW2 and some heavy fighting in Vietnam. What era is this?
I'm not even sure this is the right forum. A search of "challenge coins" turned-up nothing.

I believe that is a religious type medal that was given out to the marines to wear around their necks , as religious support while they were in battle.
Or they could have been given out by the unit chaplain for the family members to wear also, while the soldier was off in combat.
A challenge coin would never has a slot/hole for a necklace , as i have been given quite a few coins while i was in the military.
