High Ranks Didn't Automatically Get Low Roll Numbers
Here's the ultimate proof that just because a Stammrollennummer on an Erkennungsmarke is low that it belonged to an officer: Hermann Historica is presently conducting an auction that includes a huge lot of material that belonged to Generalfeldmarschall Erhardt Milch and included is his Soldbuch, the first page of which records a soldier's Erkennungsmarke marking; then Generaloberst (at the time the book was issued) Milch's disc read: "R.d.L. u. Ob. d. L. 517", which stands for Reichsminister der Luftfahrt und Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe, Stammrollennummer 517; so the Generaloberst was number 517- definitely not a roll kept in order of rank or importance; more likely simply alphabetical.
Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...
