I recently purchased this ID tag. I'm hoping it's real... and is my translation correct?

Luftwaffe Schlachterei Kompanie 'Hermann Göring' / #54

Can you give me any more information? If my translation is correct, it's a Luftwaffe ‘Hermann Goering’ Butcher Company”, like the guy holding onto the piggies in the bottom photo

By the way, I always wondered which is considered the top. 2 holes or 1 hole?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I can only help with one of your questions. The top of the tag is the side with the two holes. This is where the cord was secured around the soldiers neck.

The 'font' also matches known fakes- one has to be very cautious with 'interesting' units like HG- real ones are quite rare and fakes quite common
