It also looks like the soldier scratched a name or something of the back. Hopefully the pics don't suck too bad.

That's 3. Batterie Beobachtungs-Abteilung 2- Beobachtungs-Abteilungen - Lexikon der Wehrmacht (artillery observers). And 'Brandt' is a German name, and the script is remarkably legible.
