So i open this thread and i am happy about many responses.

I have been looking at my emarken and if I am correct, then this is my only steel example.

Stainless steel, Edelstahl Erkennungsmarken were originally specified for German LW aircrew or Heer/Waffen SS Panzerwaffe troops. The experience of realising that the identification of lost personnel in such units was an acute issue. The Germans having seen the use of stainless steel dog tags by the USA being a possible incitement to them in turn producing them.

However it can be found that stainless steel Ekm were not exclusively issued to personnel from these units, the need for erkennungsmarken to be issued did sometimes mean that whatever type was available was used.
