Here is my other M16/Stirnpanzer combo. The shell is a T.J. 68, and has a steel liner band. Judging from the fit of the band, AND the condition of the split pins, I believe it was a period done replacement. The plate itself is forge marked R.V.28, and has what I believe to be a museum inventory number painted on the inner surface. The chinstrap and the strap for the plate are both gone. I am convinced that during the Great War the shell was worn with a brow plate due to the shadow on the circumference of the shell that runs from the slots on the plate around the back of the shell that matches the location and width of the strap that would have been present when the piece was in service. The wear on the brow of the shell also suggests that a plate was worn. Finally, the patina on both matches pretty well, so again, the romantic in me would like to imagine that these 2 have been together for the past 98 years - who knows? Hope you like it, Jim G.
