At the momment i baught it I was thinking about restorating it, but now with thise story coming up I am going to put that energy in trying to find proofs of thise suposed ritual.

I like his idea best. The story of the ritual really gives this
piece some history. Personally, I would leave it as is.

Very interesting thread. I have known this ritual, but not related to old items such as your stein. The unit I served with used named beer steins for each officer who served there.
These steins were constructed of silver, but had a glass bottom. When the member died in combat the glass bottom was broken, prohibiting anyone else ever using it again.

No , just jocking, I agree, i am still not there yet!
I had a contact with a beerstein collector's club who also confirmed the ritual, but when I asked for any consistent proof; i didnt get any answer.
