    Hello all,

The leather sheath on this one reminded me of earlier German examples and I would like to get a positive ID if at all possible. Any help?

It looks like a Quillion Back. But may have been modified. The blade is shorter than normal. On a regular 98 Quillion Back the quillion/spine goes to the point Like this.

.The Blade on mine is about 20 5/16 ".The one above looks like the point was made some where along the blood grove.
If you don't mind me asking.
How long is the blade on this?

Its a shortened version of S98 long bayo - blade length should be 12 inches.

Called as a S98 Matrosen Artillerie (or something like that). Nice example with good original sheath

It's indeed a shortened bayonet. The official name would be S98nA, that means Seitengewehr model 1898 neuer Art (bayonet model 1898 new type). The first model (S98aA, Seitengewehr alter Art) had the wooden grips made in one pice, but because they were damaged very quickly, they changed this model to the S98nA with seperate grips.
In this case I think it's an export model, because of the number on the guard. Normally with a German bayonet there would be a regimental stamp, but this is another number... can not tell from the provided pictures, but possibly the Peruvian export model... So better pictures will be neaded to determine this. When it's the Peruvian model there will also be a stamp (Peruvian wappen) on the hilt of the pommel.
Maybe you can show some pictures of the other stamps, so we can see who made this bayonet ans in which year?
Another possibility would be that the bayonet is German and used in a shortened version after WW1... hopefully we can find out by better pictures...

    Hope this helps you,

    Adler
