    Hello everyone,

    I am new to the site having been searching for some information on a bayonet that I purchased in a yard sale.
    It appears to be the Seitengewehr 98/05 variation from WWI. It was manufactured by SCHTEL & SACHS in Schwienfurt in 1918. It has has King Ludwig (Bavaria) markings on the back of the blade and on the butt of the bayonet. Oddly enough it has a clear plastic type handle with a 1930's type photo underneath on one side.

    I am curious if anyone knows about this type of handle or might it have been modified at a later date by a German soldier.

    Maker = Fichtel & Sachs.

    I would guess that the grip replacement was done by a GI (possibly during/after WW2) - I've seen others.

    It would not have been done by the German soldier who was issued it - I suspect he would have been in serious trouble for damaging army property.

    I agree with Ritchie B, this type of vandalism would not of been tolerated within the Imperial Army, ....done post war, by whom and for whom we shall probably never know.

    Richie has nailed it.

    I rather like it, as it has a certain period charm of mid 1940's "kitsch".

    Cheers, Ade.
