There were more painted up than you would think. A close study of pictures from late 1918 and indeed paintings show it was common. However I have recently seen a period painting of dead germans at Belleau Wood with block cammo helmets. This battle occurred in June 1918 one month before the official sanctioned date for the cammo colours. I think units were painting helmets well before the Ludendorf Directive!
