Hi all. II came across a demag / crank handle bayonet for sale (pictured). The seller hasn't set the price yet and I'm not positive that the bayonet is real. I'm wondering what are the easy identifiers between a real and a fake. So far I noticed that his bayonet has a stamping which starts faded on left and becomes crisper as it goes right. This isn't what I would expect, but I'm not a demag expert either. The scabbard is black with some rust and has the loop hanger/frog. The handle is not blued, it has some type of dull green paint on it but I don't know if its original.

So, any tips / advice? Also, what is one worth in average worn condition?
I'm having trouble finding any authentic ones sold or for sale because
I'm not sure if I'm seeing worn fakes or the real deal when I look. Thanks

Im sorry, It was Bernie Levine's Knife forum that I'm thinking of.

    Is that right?

It was on Bernie's site right?
Did you measure the crossguard thickness?

Heerespistole, they do make reproductions of this knife, and if aged it can be difficult to tell them apart.....I would expected to see more of a "kink" in the cross guard, however this appears to be a later 1916-18 piece, as the stamping on the obverse of the blade reads "GESETZLICH GESCHUTZT" (another legit stamping after 1916 would of been "GES.GESCH") prior to 1916 it would of read "Demag DRGM", its length should be around 262mm, blade length 152mm, this piece appears to have lost its retaining strap from its belt loop, this belt loop is either in leather or woven paper ersatz material and is approx 75mm long, it is rivited on to the scabbard by 2 hollow pop rivets, check the scabbard to see that it retains/or has, its blade retaining slide, rivited inside with a single flat headed rivit, externally visible on the neck of the scabbard. They were typically painted green thro to field grey, and an example from a reputable dealer will be around £200 +, I wouldnt be bothered by the quality of the stampings, as this tends to vary throughout the makers time frame, hope this helps...
    Prost ! Steve.

    AZ Phil,

I did post this on blade forums, in the Levine section. Is that you too there?
I wanted more than 1 opinion before I go after this bayonet.

Yes Sir thats me.And I don't blame you one bit for looking for more confirmation on this one.
Like I mention there, I always wanted one of these in my collection but have been put off by the reproductions on the market
Thats awesome news that this is the real deal and I hope you get it for a good price.I always love a Happy bayonet ending!!!!!!!!!
(if you don't mind me asking, what's the price on that one?)

    This question is for Oradour.
Is there anyway other than experience to tell the difference between the real deal and the fakes out there?
What do you look for when examining one of these ?
I want one real bad but don't want to get burned next time I see one. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks AZPhil
