There is no apparent means of attachment as far as I can tell. The inside is just flat brass - no peculiarities. The emblem sits on there flat.
There are literally hundreds of these every week on Ebay, iOffer, Liveauctioneers etc. I think the amount available, and where they're being sold suggests a high probability that these are in many cases faked, probably in India or China. Worth looking around though I suppose.

I was told that these and the lighters made out the center disks (along with many other "Gott Mitt Uns" items) where made in France during the late 20's. They were souvenirs sold to US vets who went back over for a tenth year reunion. I have no documentation on this and it may just be an "old collector's" tale, but it makes sense.
I had a look online at similar objects with various emblems and many do have modern, low-quality, attributes. The detail is high in the one I picked up with a fair amount of oxidation. One may never know.
