The first knife bayonet was introduced for the first German rifle with a magazine Rifle M1871/84. The knife-bayonet, which had been adopted in January 1884, was named M71/84. This bayonet was one of the very first adopted knife bayonets in the world.

The M71/84 appears to from the 3rd Bavarian Reserve Regiment, 2nd company, piece number 181. The scabbard looks to have been passed around a little, seeing service with different regiments, 6th Regiment (Grenadier-Regt. Graf Kleist von Nollendorf (1.Westpreußisches) Nr.6 (Posen) V Armee Korps) 9th company, piece number 217. Then with the 83rd Regiment (Infanterie-Regt. von Wittich (3.Kurhessisches) Nr.83 (Cassel; III Bn Arolsen) XI Armee Korps), 12th company, piece 51.

This is the conversion of the short 1871 Mauser knife-bayonet, which was then deployed on the model 84 Mauser rifle with tube magazine, and finally modified between 1900 and 1905 to use on the Mauser 98 rifle.

They were made utilizing blades of the M71/84 knife-bayonet and were designated M84/98-(1st pattern). The scabbard, though of the correct type, has mismatching regimental marks.
