    Default M16 Square dip?

    Gentlemen,

I've been offered a M16 that seems to be a 'Square dip', however the liner is a standard liner. I've read that the liner originally was different than the later produced M16s.

It doesn't look like a square dip to me, the bottom angle of the dip is too rounded IMO

    Gentlemen,

Thanks to KradSpam's post, I could tell the difference. A standard M16, Q62, with a perfect liner. Thanks to all who replied.

Where are you getting these "Square dipped M16s " from, as far as my reference books go they did'nt make them in the ww1 format helmets, there is a Droop bill M17 but the flaired rim is the same as always

They were the very first stahlhelm as we know it Dave, made from December 1915 and very early into 1916. The shape of the 'dip' at the front of the skirt put too much stress on the steel and a great many of them have diagonal cracks in the corner, which led to a slight redesign of the angles involved.

A rare period pic of the square dip in wear in WW1, and a nice comparison with a standard M16.
