Live to ride -- Ride to live
I was addicted to the "Hokey-Pokey" but I've turned
myself around.

A really great find Steve, congratulations!
Looks like a Kurassier or Jaeger zu Pferde type of helmet.
I remember seeing a Saxon officer helmet in this style that had been on Helmut Weitze's website for several years. I just went to look for it and post a link to it, but I can no longer find it. Maybe he recently sold his example?
Best Regards,
Alan

Could this not be a piece of trench art made from a brass artillery shell casing? It look like beaten metal rather than cast.

Take my word for it, this is a very well executed (and heavy) cast piece and can in no way be compared to trench art. A few minutes ago I removed the helmet from the marble base and examined the inside, the spike is a separate casting and threaded. The representation of the folds in the cloth cover is beautifully done, and there is only the slightest hint of filing to the casting to clean it up after removing from the mould. The image should expand at least twice if you wish to examine it closer.
There are a few slight narrow indentations to the surface, but this can only be expected on a piece which is probably around 90 to 100 years old. My dealer friend who examined it was of the opinion that it is a desk ornament purchased by - or for, a retired officer of the Garde regiment. It was actually purchased from a dealer of books who attends many of the local arms fairs, and it was what I considered to be quite a reasonable price.
Cheers,
Steve

It's very elegant. It would look great among some old books, IMHO
