I'm going to assume the mud was applied post-war. There is some mud on the inside also. Suspect someone took a crappy WW1 helmet and covered it in burlap and mud. Just wondering if mud camo helmets were actually used.

Definitely post war done. The liner pins and all are missing, but the burlap covers where they would be? It does make a convincing cover, so I suppose its plausible that something similar would have been used.
I'm sure deliberate or unintentional muddied helmets were used given the conditions - and this is a good indication of what would have been done - but its just a mock up & not a collector piece.
