hi can anyone tell me what to use to clean my pickelhaube also what do you use to preserve the leather straps

Dave (golf19gt), as discussed.....or see the "Kaisers bunker" topic page on cleaning as others above have stated, expert advice ! I would not oil any of the fittings or shell, a sympathetic clean with a soft cloth once in a while....however you can fully restore a Pickelhaube to its former glory with some spit & polish and plenty of elbow grease !
