researching imperial german awards

can you research imperial german awards like the common awards? if so how do you do it as i know you can research british and soviet from the naming and numbers

Simple answer for single Imperial awards is no, because these awards are not named.
Higher ranking Officer medal/ribbon bars provide a much better chance for ID.

There are Imperial award certificates, but unless you have these along with
the original medals, it is pretty impossible. Also, anyone could put a medal
and a certificate together.........

John, as walkwolf says, very difficult if not impossible, unless you are lucky enough to recieve with the medals some form of provanence, i.e. award certificates, pay or service books or you obtain them from a veterans family, if that is the case document the family name and any previous history.
