WW1 German Canteen?

I picked up a few things at a flea market today, one of which is this canteen. The dealer believes it to be German or Austrian likely during WW1. It appears that way to me as well but I'm not entirely sure. I'm curious to if there's any markings on it, but there's no way to remove the cloth without destroying it, any opinions and comments are welcome!

Italian WWII, but not sure when the design came into being. May be some subtle differences if it is made earlier.
