During ww1, over 1000 Germans were held captive in Portugal, in places like Peniche, Caldas da Rainha and Angra do Heroísmo.
The camp of Caldas da Rainha was located in the old park buildings, over 170 Germans were housed there, 17 soldiers and remaining civilians. They were brought by train, the housing conditions were horrible and a female captive even complained to the Red Cross.
