WWI German Helmet

Hello,
I have an opportunity to purchase this helmet.
Can anyone tell me what I have here?
Why is it painted?
Also, can you give me an approximate value?

Appears to be a camouflage painted Model 1918 large size (66 or 68) steel helmet. In July of 1918 the German troops were directed to paint their helmets in a camouflage pattern. Colors to be used green, yellow ochre, rust and brown, they were to be equal patches of color out lined by a black line. Not all helmets were painted using all 5 colors, 3 and 4 color patterns are found.

Original shell, not absolutely convinced of the camo paint being original. Could you post some macro photos showing paint, wear, and pins.

Agree ww1 model 1918 paint looks good from pictures but these cammo jobs are like ww2 sometimes hard to judge I do like it myself. timothy

I like this shell. A bit rough, but an interesting pattern.
These must have looked stunning back in the day.
Most I've ever seen have larger patches of
colour and slightly thicker lines, but I
believe it was up to the individual.

An artistic type in the squad might be called upon
to paint many helmets - all being nearly identical
through one mans handiwork. I believe our
resident helmet guru Doug has two
which are very close.

Although it's only a shell ( and I'm a cheap buzzard )
I'd be offering around $400, but it really is between
you and the seller..........

Looks like the artist had a definite cubist background.

A Model 1918 camo with finger thick black separation lines between colors . The paint job looks period and these were done by individuals not set to a specific pattern. I like it!
Are there any MFG. stamps/ size stamps on it???
Since it doesn't have the liner or the liner band. How are the liner studs attached? I don't see the split pins on the inside of the Helm.
I would be at a lower price than Walkwolf. I'm a REALLY Cheap bastard and would start at $150 for this shell .HAGGLE, HAGGLE, HAGGLE. Start low and then see what happens

After looking a second time, I still have reservations as to the paint, wear, and pins. From the quality of these photos the paint is questionable at best.


By the way, these are often faked and the devil is in the details.
