I had heard it was there with the idea of helping cool your head by absorbing the heat - I may be wrong though. This is a nice piece! I especially like personalised items like this with names or inscriptions by the original wearer.

Certainly a good example.
I have had a few over the years, still have two but the best one I had I sold, the paint finish was in truly superb condition.
