Brodie Helmets

These are my Brodie helmets. One has a lighter overcoat of paint that someone applied. Has anyone seen this color before on a Brodie helmet? My first assumption is that it was applied by a kid/collector, but I don't want to assume that and find out there was a legitimate reason for the paint.
If it doesn't belong on it, should I try to remove it?

Hi Paul IMO the Grey paint is post war applied on the one Brodie .

Paul you have a nice pair real shame both have there chinstraps missing,but still good looking Brodies for 100 years nearly young,thanks for sharing........

The grey paint could very well indicate use as a ship board navy helmet.

The gray paint on the underside of the rim on the one IMO does not match the rest of the helmet for wear or patina or are my tired eyes and small phone screen playing tricks on me.

I believe it is the same paint color. The exterior has rust bleed through, and texture that gives it a different appearance.
