Hi, and welcome to the forum!
Thanks for posting the cap. No bother at all! We like to see items, it is what the forum is all about.
I have moved it to the WW1 section, as this might be the best place to get answer. It is certainlly old and I suspect pre WW1, hence the move here.
Given where it was found and the design, I suspect it is actually a military academy cap. I don't believe it is US Army issue.
Cheers, Ade.

I have seen one of these before, But can't remember where. My thoughts are a military academy cap. What academy was it found in???

That's where I have seen it before. Harry was wearing it in this photo.

At or near Missouri Military Academy. Our school has been in existence since 1889
but we have samples of all our uniforms from over the years and this didn't fit with
any of them. Given that there used to be 3 military academies in Missouri it could
be from Kemper or Wentworth. Kemper closed and we do have some memorabilia
from them. I especially like the find of the National Guard uniform with Harry Truman,
a Missouri native, wearing it. I bet that fits most closely that it's a National Guard
uniform. Thanks, and anything more specific would be appreciated.
It is not National Guard.
US OD caps never had colored piping.
It is an academy cap of some kind, I don't have a clue which one.
