M1917 helmet questions.

I have questions on this M1917 helmet I got in the mail.

Here is the helmet shell.

Batch and maker number. YJ162

What's this clip and ring for?


Liner identity?
That's the only stamp I can see for certain.

Also is there any known way to date the helmet by these pictures? The helmet has a rough texture.

The marking in the liner is an Ordnance inspection stamp.

On the inside of the dome of the helmet, is there a letter N about 2 inches tall in white paint?

Can I get a picture of the N?
Like for reference of how it looks or where it is?

Nice lid, I would say the ring is for hanging the helmet on a nail,etc....
