My Grandad: Clp Isaac Stevenson RA 1915-1919.

Hi Ade,

I now make sure all our family photos are anotated on the back as yout right it is so frustrating to have all these photos and have no way of finding out more info about them.

Will copy some of my grandads photos etc and post them, a few years ago i was lucky enough to get a couple of guys to go to Kew and they found my Grandads records and produced a nice brochure for me with them in , it only cost £30 , one of the best 30 quids i've spent, i learnt more about him through them than i could have found out in a lifetime !!

I have a cracking 18 pounder shell from Thiepval on the Somme which i will photograph then post.

It is highly likely that your Grandfather will have fought all over the Western Front in all the major Battlefields due to the way in which the Artillery units were moved around. I have been to the Firepower Museum at Woolwich aa they have the Artillery war diaries and i now have the war diaries for both Batteries so know exactly where he was at any one time , they may be able to pin down your grandfathers exact unit for you

I know the files I need to examine at the National Archives at Kew. A mate of mine works at "Firepower" and he advised they are:

War Office 95/1400 for 40 Bde RFA

War Office 95/1401 for 42 Bde RFA

These will cover my Grandad's possible units.

3rd Division

I just need to get down there and have a look.

This one is a genuine Somme 18 Pounder dated 1916 from Thiepval

I think next year I am going to visit were he fought. I am planning a trip now to include Dunkirk where my Uncle fought in WW2, (I wrote about him here too) then moving on to the WW1 battlefields where my Grandad fought.

Thats a very impressive family history you can tell. And ,as i know, you will very well preserve it for the future generation

Hi Guys, bringing this old thread back up as I have some more pics to share.

I mentioned this in post 7. First is my Grandad in the St John Ambulance Brigade in WW2. I showed his insignia earlier in this thread. He can be seen in the middle of the back row (Rank of Sgt). The photo was taken in front of the Ruddington Methodist Chapel which is still there today unchanged.
