Ok that explains why I couldn't find him

3rd May 1917 isn't second battle of arras either. That would be the "Third Battle of the Scarpe", part of the Arras Offensive of 1917, which, of course, started off with the Canadian Corps taking Vimy Ridge in April, and carried on until August.

Now that we have him I can nail down exactly what insignia he would have had.

2/7th Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), were a war-formed 2nd Line duplicate of the pre-War 7th Bn (which was renamed 1/7th). It was formed at Milnsbridge (the home of 7th Bn) in September 1914, and fought with the 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division. It was broken up after the Battle of Arras in 1918.

Brass shoulder title would have been T over 7 over W.Riding. In addition, 2/7th Bn wore a green felt rectangle (2.5 x 1.5 inches) on the shoulder straps (in action probably with the title removed), as part of the Battle Insignia scheme of 62nd Division.

Now all that remains is to figure out if they were a 1908 or 1914 equipment (or a mixture) unit.

Hi again Tom, it might be worth you spending a few quid on getting a researcher to copy his Medal Index Roll entry. It will cost you under a tenner and it MIGHT gain you another nuggett of info about him. I used this chap to get my Grandad's entry details. But if nothing else you will get a photocopy of his details.
