Dad forgot to ask about if he has his Dad's medals, but I will find out.

I really hope for you they still have his medals, that would be a very nice family grouping to put together. Don't be dissapointed when you find out that they may be gone, be happy with what you allready know and have...

And I'll follow up your advice about that family member.

In WW1, a 'fitter' was a mechanic, as opposed to a 'rigger' who worked on the airframe. Not trying to be a smart guy - just thought I'd throw that out there in case you did not know.

I came across this equally intersting thread from your grandad's thread.

Just for the record I would point out that in this picture:



he is actually dressed 100% RNAS... no RAF anywhere. The albatross was an RNAS badge adopted by the RAF on it's formation, as were the buttons, which were similar to later RAF but with a rope border. These were used by the RAF initially and then later without the rope border.

The badge on his arm is an RNAS Engineer badge.

Even his cap is naval. The first pattern RAF cap seems to have been the one uniform item all men in the RAF were issued immediately. You often see RNAS and RFC jackets with RAF caps in early pictures, but not in this case. The early RAF cap was very similar to this though, but with a sylised eagle/albatross shape replacing the anchor in the cap badge.
