Photo of six Coldstream Guardsmen sitting in an excavation having a break. The second from left is my Grandfather but I know next to nothing about his service apart from his having been in Egypt.
This is probably Pre WW1 so may bi inappropriate for this Forum but I would dearly like to find some more information. Could it be in the Sudan? The mix of uniforms is interesting and when was the visor-less cap replaced?
The amount of bones present suggest to me that this may be the result from digging in one of the innumerable ancient Egyptian burial grounds that are all over the desert, but generally in proximity to the Nile or it's tributaries. These vast cemeteries were used for thousands of years in some cases and contain tens of thousands of burials. Just my thoughts.

The Broderick caps were phased out from after the introduction of the Service cap and forage/dress cap circa 1906, though in some instances they were worn much later than this date. Obviously the one chap is wearing the later type of cap so this perhaps hints at a date very near to the introduction of the newer cap.
An interesting picture and the burials do suggest the middle east.
