    Perhaps a case for an artillery/mortar clinometer???

    I think I found one and it's not what I thought it may be by a long shot.
    It's for a military issued flute ?
    VERY RARE WW1 MILITARY MARKED FLUTE IN DATED CASE 19 (03/26/2011)...

    I'm thinking the item is actually a fife - or perhaps
    even a piccolo - not a flute.

    A flute is nearly 2 feet long.........

    Well...in all fairness, the description Does say "flute", but I agree-being military, I would think it being a Fife is more likely...

    Bang on. Its a HENRY POTTER & Co Military Flute. Overall length is 15 inches. it breaks into two parts for storage. Henry Potter is probably a rarer maker though.
