Unseen First World War Photographs

A treasure trove of First World War photographs was discovered recently in France. Published here for the first time, they show British soldiers on their way to the Somme. But who took them? And who were these Tommies marching off to die?

Yes...no combat pics....but I love to see all the different types of uniform in wear. Those soldiers using fur are very interesting! Cool to see how different each regt. was....

Nice comment !! Within a few months of these photos being taken most of these men will have perished in the Battle of the Somme which if you read the accompanying article cost 1,000,000 casualties

These are not " boring " photos , to the researcher of the First World War they photos provide a tremendous insight into uniforms, badges etc and a look into the eyes of a lost generation of British and French soldiers.

Superb photo's of the Great War. Those portrait shots give a lot of insight to the men involved in this terrible conflict. The use of fur incorporated into the uniforms was fantastic. I've never seen that before. Thanks for the link.

It seems the publication of that first set in The Independent newspaper has led to a second batch being collated.
