I think will be completely different to one you were issued Ben!!.I think the medal you & I have would be for campaign service..."Northern Ireland"...same sort of ribbon but different medal..It will be intersting to see...Cheers Terry.

That is a great WWI era set.
I usually like to leave medals as they come, but sometimes just my
finger tips will do the job - A few gentle wipes will remove quite
a lot of grime, but still leave them with patina. Don't overdo it
or you can remove too much. You want the black tarnish
to be lightly removed from the high spots and remain
in the recessed areas...........

Your right Terry. There were two lots of GSMs awarded during the 20th century. Firstly the 1918- 1962 GSM that was awarded with the clasps:
S. Persia
Kurdistan
Iraq
N. W. Persia
Southern Desert Iraq
Northern Kurdistan
Palestine
S. E. Asia 1945- 46
Bomb and Mine Clearance 1945- 49
Bomb and Mine Clearance 1945- 56
Palestine 1945- 48
Malaya (George VI)
Malaya (Elizabeth II)
Cyprus
Near East
Arabian Peninsula
Brunei
Then there was the 1962 on-wards GSM which can be found with clasps for:
Borneo
Radfan
South Arabia
Malay Peninsula
South Vietnam (Very Rare, If memory serves only 67 or something of these were awarded)
Northern Ireland
Dhofar
Lebanon
Mine Clearance
Gulf
Kuwait
N. Iraq and S. Turkey
Air Operations Iraq
I should mention that these basic list came from the Medal Year Book 2004, If you haven't got one I recommend them. Even the older ones are useful reference but ignore the price guides lol
Thanks J for the info very interesting I didn't know it was issued for so many different conflicts/wars/Ops...What annoys me a bit is when people call the Northern Ireland medal..when it clearly isn't not going by your list there...Yes thousands were issued for N.I including mine..."1989.. when I was a wee lad".... Cheers Terry.
Cheers for the photos guys, yes they are very different, more like the NI medal to be honest, but for comparison here are the modern Iraq medals, sorry about the rear but mine are court mounted so cannot take them apart
Ben
