One point of note: the caps here posted are not necessarily those of the Allgemeine SS. The black cap was worn by all branches of the SS surely until the outbreak of war, if not later. The SS began to be described in its evolving constituent parts in the course of the latter half of 1934, i.e. Allgemeine SS, SSVT and Wachverbaende which as of 1936 were called the SSTV. Hence, while the bulk of these caps were those of Allgemeine SS units.....the Dinkel cap, for instance, there are others that plainly are not.

The issue of the constituent parts of the SA had been a political cause for the independence of the SS from the SA after June 1934 and Himmler was always at pains to foster the totality of the Gesamt-SS, even if the various bureaucratic and operational roles and missions tended to split up the organization, especially in wartime. Heini H. was quite the back stabber and niggler about the fractious nature of the SA. You can listen to one of his speeches in the internet where he goes on about this theme in the year 1943.

The black uniform remained in wear in isolated instances almost until war's end. Each day one finds more evidence of its endurance well beyond the mark suggested by collector group think that the uniform was scrapped.

For those interested there were a series of orders from AH delineating the roles and mission of the SS in the years 1934 and 1938, especially as this issue pertained in the SSVT. Once again, this new biography of Longerich offers the most up to date and informed material on this important score. If you want to understand SS uniforms, then you have to understand the peculiar, rapid, and confusing growth of the organization out of nowhere and then into the abyss. It was a short lived organization in historical terms, part of which is why it is so interesting.

    FB,
I am working on RZM tags and finding period material that relates directly to the SS is extremely difficult. Here is an RZM page from 1936 that illustrates and lists all kinds of organisations apart from the SS. At least it confirms the time period these sweatbands are suggesting.

    With reference to D's post # 36

Here is one of these 1936 tags of generic pattern apparently for the SA in an SS cap.... this is a Wille cap, also retailed by the RZM. This handwriting is found in other caps extant in the collector sphere.

Notice the similarity. Obviously, an entirely different cap.

an even earlier piece. One can only imagine whatever soul in Munich who so nicely inscribed these magical letters before they bought the person a rubber stamp.

a further bit of data, however arcane....

a Mueller cap from the year 1936...perhaps. One of the signal traits of the Mueller cap is the side panel textile in this model differs from the silken lining of the top of the Muetzenboden. But please do not make this generalization into some silly dogma. I am sure there is an exception to my observation.

excellent thread - thanks to FB and others for winkling out details for us in both text-n-pix. so interesting to see the Absolutism of the not-so-distant past given its just reward. it may drive some crazy to see the "generics" in unexpected places, but a FB suggests variations are a notable part of the temper of those times. and now, these.

the postings are valuable and much appreciated.
