    His eyeglasses look too modern... Almost looks like my grade school principal that used corporal punishment.. ( Big board whacks on the arse ) G

    If I recall properly, the above is the case, but I cannot recall exactly. I have seen this picture before. However, the post war use of the exact uniform with all the insignia would have been most unlikely in the FRG, perhaps more possible in Austria.

    This is a portrait of General Hans Von Donat taken after 1957. He is wearing a 1957 ribbon bar on his tunic. It was discussed several years ago here in this thread:

    Very unusual. Of course, putting on the old uniform for a private portrait photograph (as opposed to wearing it in public) would not have been in violation of the law.

    Andreas is always right. German generals were very much a feature of life in the FRG of the 1950s and 1960s, but without the public display of anti constitutional symbols, as they were called.

    The Deutscher Soldatenkalender of the epoch is a good source to follow all of this.
