wow...i am flattered. Thank you all. It was a bit of a struggle, but i t came together somehow. I didn't show the inside on purpose, because it still lacks the inner lining and a leather sweatband.
If you are interested, i will post pictures of the cap i will actually give my hubby for his birthday.

hello again, everybody. I have made 3 more caps since my last post, and this is the most "promising" one so far. I think i found myself a very nice new hobby.
And, to answer my initial question myself: I was told the fabric i was looking for was virgin wool. I ordered some and i am currently trying to match the cap from my first
post more accurately. I have until the 28th of march still....

If you are in Germany, you should have much less trouble finding the right textile, because of the wealth of such things there.

The cap textile was usually a woolen blend of high quality. The field caps in the years prior to 1939 were often doeskin wool.

The key is to find the right shade of field grey, which should be possible.
